Stop Snoozing, Wake Up With Your Higher Self Each Morning

We all want to grow and change our lives for the better, and many of us await the New Year or our birthdays for a fresh start to do so. The reality is, we have a fresh start every single morning, accompanied by the power to implement systems to radically change our lives any day of the year. Everyone knows that morning sets the tone for the whole day, so being woken up by a generic alarm sound and rushing to hit snooze to stop the agony may not be the best way to set your day or life up for success. However, snoozing is a notoriously difficult habit to break. Every night I promised myself (and believed) I would not hit the snooze button in the morning. Then every morning I would hit snooze, thinking (repeatedly) “what’s the harm of just 9 more minutes,” to find I had woken up 2 hours later, missed the opportunity for my morning rituals and gym session, and was heading into my day feeling behind, anxious and with an L (loss) already under my belt.

Realizing this in the final months of 2022, I decided there had to be a better way to wake up and take control of my life. Enter my own personalized alarm clock. I learned that our minds are remarkably malleable in the morning and that the initial thoughts and actions you take in the AM will determine the outcome of your day, and ultimately your life. I decided I needed to find a way to remind myself first thing in the morning of who I was, what I wanted, and how I would get it. Scripting being a powerful manifestation technique, I decided to script my ideal lifestyle, daily routines, and habits as well as claim my dream life as if it was already in the present tense. Then I wrote down my goals for that month and what I needed to do to accomplish them and recorded this script into an audio message in my voice memos app, reading it with conviction. I downloaded the MP3 file onto my phone and set it as my alarm sound so it would be the first thing I heard when I woke up in the morning.

So it’s 5:55 AM, and I wake up to the sound of my own voice saying:

“Maya,

You are deeply loved, beautiful, blessed, healthy, and capable. You compare only to the woman you were yesterday, and are getting better every day. You adorn your body in beautiful fabrics and feel like a feminine goddess in every moment. You know that looking your best is part of living your best and you look and feel amazing in your skin. You are committed to becoming the strongest version of yourself both mentally and physically. You enjoy your body and appreciate everything it does for you. You acknowledge painful emotions and release what no longer serves you…”

And I went on for roughly seven minutes, which was the perfect amount of time to lay in bed listening to it and setting my mind straight for the day. Of course, affirmations are only helpful if accompanied by the corresponding action. Still, my morning wake-up call became the catalyst for me to act on creating the feelings and experiences I wished to have. Being reminded of my goals for the month in place of a generic alarm became invaluable in accomplishing them.

Envision waking up to the sound of your higher self telling you everything you wish your mom and dad would have said to you growing up, or that ex-partner or best friend of yours. Affirming every single part of yourself, reminding yourself who you are destined to become, and instead of snoozing, laying back in bed wide awake and listening to your higher self motivate and encourage you for the day ahead. It can also be adjusted month to month because as you persist, you will find that you are already embodying some of the characteristics you had once aspired to, and are ready to incorporate new ones. It’s so important we experience self-love first thing in the morning, especially since getting up is often the most challenging part of the day.

A TikTok trend has been people turning the song “Snooze” by SZA into a self-love anthem, which lends perfectly to this concept. “How can I snooze and miss the moment, you're just too important!” And when you remind yourself of exactly who you are first thing in the morning and wake up to the bliss of self-appreciation and affirmation, you’ll never snooze on yourself or your dreams again.
